Blog Entry #6

For Task #1 this week I drafted a storyboard for my multimedia project having to do with Google Products for Education which is what my MMP project is focused on. I posted the images below of the storyboards I created. I started out with the homepage and then it gives an inner glimpse to each page that is within my website that teachers will be able to navigate to for each individual google education product. Although these are storyboard drafts I have intentions on sticking to these ideas as closely as possible. I would really enjoy insight from others as to what you think the best idea would be for this type of website design. My storyboard and website design will change depending upon the website design program that I decide to use. Wix is a website design that has a website with plenty of navigational buttons and looks similar to most websites. I used this website design platform in the past which inspires me to learn about other programs such as the following alternative website design program, Adobe Spark. This website design program is more sleek and simplified than Wix because it has a continuous scrolling page of features and pages for the entirety of the website. When creating my storyboards I focused on different rules of design that we have learned thus far in this class such as; upper left hand side logo home page button, the positioning of buttons, adding different modalities to the website for functionality. By adding these different web design features it makes the website more appealing to the audience and especially since my targeted viewers are understood to not be well advanced in technology a simplistic and easy navigational website would be beneficial. Overall, I hope you enjoy looking at my storyboards and I hope to gain some insight from you about what I should consider about my website designs going forward.

For Task #2 this week I decided I would create a short video to reflect on my running career. It was amazing when I started to create the video how hard it was to contain it to only :60 seconds. When reading through the tasks for this week I thought this task was going to give me the most trouble but I think overall, it was the easiest task and also the one I enjoyed the most. I think by creating this video and giving it a sense of modality by utilizing the ken burns tool to animate my still pictures real aided to my video slideshow. It is amazing how simply adding a feature or effect to a still picture can make such a major difference to what the viewer perceives. From my MDMC I clarified that I did not want to use Animoto since I did not want the watermark to take over my pictures and take away from the idea I was going with. Therefore, I decided to utilize a different program that I used in the past, iMovie. Overall, I found this program fairly easy to learn, the hardest aspect was learning where the different tools were located and how to navigate the program. However, after understanding the navigational concept it was smooth sailing. I hope you enjoy watching my video and can gain an insight as to why running is such a huge factor in my life and in my overall happiness, enjoy!

MMP Proposal

Multimedia Montage Project Proposal

Background/Rationale:
During my student teaching in the Fall I worked closely within the Franklin Twp. School District in Somerset County. The school community that I was a part of for the first half of the semester was a second grade classroom at Hillcrest Elementary School. In continuing my internship experience, I joined the school community of a fifth grade classroom at Sampson G. Smith Intermediate School. During this time, it became evident to me how important the use of technology has become in the educational world and how advanced or lack thereof educators were in using these devices.
When involving myself in the fifth grade classroom it was very evident how technology has become imperative for students’ learning. I was involved in the school community just as the 1:1 Chromebook initiative was becoming implemented into the classrooms. Many teachers including my cooperating teacher were starting to learn just what technology has to offer in the classroom and effective ways of implementing it into his/her teaching. Teachers were required to complete online training programs on their own time in order to understand the different uses for the google programs as well as how to get started. In talking to a few of the teachers about these programs it became clear that the teachers were multi-tasking while watching these videos which in turn led to little if any knowledge from the training. Additionally, I was provided the opportunity to sit in on a professional development course for Google Classroom. Although teachers were engaged throughout the course many teachers left the room with many unanswered questions and stating various remarks regarding the amount of time that was allotted for this course. I became intrigued by this especially when a teacher who was sitting next to me asked me to send her my notes that I took during the course so she could go through the material at a more reasonable pace. This led me on deciding to design an online professional development training for teachers that will target what it is that they want to know (forum and website intertwined). This will enable teachers to view the website when needed and eliminate the monotonous required videos that are grueling for teachers to get through.

1.     Purpose/Goals: The main objective for my Multimedia Montage Project is to develop a professional development training website that will provide teachers the necessary knowledge and/or tips regarding Google for education products and how to effectively utilize them within their classrooms. My objective for the website is to create a combination of a website and a forum together so that teachers are able to gain the information based on their individual needs and desires as well as communicate and question other teachers regarding the tools that were explained. Additionally, I hope to organize the website so that teachers are able to navigate to specific areas regarding a topic they need more information about. When teachers are able to locate and utilize the information effectively it can help them dramatically in learning everything they want/need to know about how to use and implement google for education products in their own classrooms.

2.     Rationale & Summary of Project:
My project focuses on the implementation of google for education products within the classroom. Encouraging and supplying teachers with all the necessary tools/resources will help them to have a better understanding on the importance and knowledge for effectively using these resources in their teaching approach. The implementation of these different resources will help to improve students’ engagement and what they take away from various lessons that they are taught throughout the year. I am interested in developing an engaging as well as collaborative website that teachers can utilize throughout the time they are learning and being engaged with how to implement these different education products into his/her own classroom. Additionally, I would advise viewers of the website/forum to contribute by including their experiences and challenges that they may have encountered during this time on the forum. By teachers inputting their experiences this will allow future teachers as well as current and new technology integrators to have a better understanding towards this integration approach. Throughout the time I have spent with the teachers at Sampson G. Smith Intermediate School I think they would greatly benefit from a resource that they would be able to utilize for all their questions and/or ambitions for implementing technology into their classroom. Having a specific location where teachers can go will help them to reduce the amount of time searching the web for their questions or even the monotony of sitting through online training program videos. When teachers are able to narrow down their search for information this will not only be time consuming for them but will also provide them with fast and relevant information.

3.     Audience: The audience will consist of a wide variety of teachers within Sampson G. Smith Intermediate School. These teachers vary in their abilities with using the Google product technologies. Some teachers have very limited experiences with Google for education products as well as technology tools in general. However, other teachers in this school are well advanced and have a good understanding on how to utilize google for education products within his/her own classroom effectively and thoroughly. When designing my professional development training I need to take into consideration the various levels of abilities that the teachers have regarding google for education products as well as technology basics since both concepts go hand in hand.

4.     Overview of Your Instructional Plan and Your Learning Objective/s:
The proposal I have for the delivery of my professional development training session will involve me utilizing a screen-casting tool to create videos that will be informative for teachers when discussing the different google for education products that educators utilize within the educational setting. This will include how to set up their classroom and then how to administer different assignments, docs, slides, forms to his/her students. Teachers who are given access to my site will be permitted to view these videos for the duration that they are viewable to the public. I will post surveys onto the Google Plus communities I am a member of, as well as the staff at Sampson G. Smith Intermediate School. By doing this it will allow me to see the direction or focus that my website should have for this group of teachers and educators as a whole. Some of the questions that I will pose will be as follows:
-       Was it challenging to set-up your google classroom?
                                                                 i.     What made or didn’t make this task challenging?
-       Do you update your Google Classroom daily?
-       What resources have you utilized to understand how to use the different            Google for Education products?
-       Which product do you use most frequently or plan to use most frequently in your classroom? Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Drive, Google Forms, Google Slides, or Google Classroom.
-       Which Google for education product was easiest to learn?
-       Which Google for education product was hardest to learn?
-       Is there anything with these programs that you are still having difficulty learning or understanding?
-       When utilizing these products in your classroom have you found an increase in student engagement?
-       What product do students enjoy using the most in your classroom?

5.     Technological Tool/s & Rationale:
For my Multimedia Montage Project, I will design a website that provides educators with a resource they can access for learning about the different aspects pertaining to the range of google for education products. As I mentioned earlier I will be designing multiple screen casting videos that will be uploaded to my website. The website designing site that I plan to use is either Adobe Spark or Wix. I plan to step out of my comfort zone and use Adobe Spark since I was interested in this tool when watching Elaina’s MDMC still media critique. However, if I find that this site designing tool is challenging to use or does not fulfill the needs I would want for my website I will fall back to  the website designing website, Wix, which is a website I used when taking Introduction to Digital Tools. Overall I am looking forward to designing this website and integrating different collaborative tools such as forums and/or blogs to engage teachers in discussion with one another in order to successfully implement Google products for education into their own classrooms.

6.     Learning Theories/Principles: When designing my project there will be different guiding principles of teaching/learning that I will take into consideration in order to drive the information being administered to my audience. In reflecting on my own learning experiences I have found that I learn best when I observe a procedure being done and then try it on my own (the act of seeing and then doing). With this in mind I think it would be imperative in my professional development that the same approach is applied. Without teachers being able to try the different tasks on their own they will never fully understand the functionality of the Google products for education and how they will be able to benefit their students’ needs in the classroom. Another principle that will be addressed when designing my project would be the integration of different 21st century skills within my professional development training to have my learners fully engaged on my website. Some key 21st century skills that will be evident within my professional development website would be collaboration, communication, creativity as well as critical thinking. It is important that I build these skills strongly throughout my website so that teachers will continue to collaborate with one another beyond the learning session environment. Additionally, these skills need to be established throughout my website in order for teachers to inevitably implement these skills into their own e-learning environments within his/her own classroom.
7.     Timeline: I expect to have a good completion of the project by April 7th in order to receive valuable feedback from my peers in hopes that by the time I make the necessary revisions I will have a great finalized product. I will expect to have the website in working order up until then based upon the needs of what needs to be inputted based solely on the input I receive from my audience. I expect to get my survey responses and to begin implementing them into my website no later than the end of February so I can start to screencast and integrate the different technology tools and 21st century skills into my website. I plan to have everything completed by April 21st, 2017 but would like a finalization of the project to be made on April 17th, 2017 so I will be able to spend the rest of that week taking the time to review and have others review my final product to make any last revisions.
ROUGH ESTIMATES:
February 16th-February 23rd: Await survey responses

February 24th- March 3rd: Construct the layout of the website based on the different Google products for education that will be discussed. Create different tabs for each product. Develop the forums.

March 4th- March 18th: Create screencasts answering/walking teachers through the different products and how to set up accounts/classrooms

March 19th- April 2nd: Utilize the Google Plus communities and other forums to collect and integrate everyday questions into my website. Maybe even access Google products for education frequently asked questions or help pages for added topics to add to website.

Blog Entry #5

Mini Art School #3
* Required Activity

*Design Basic Index: Cropping Exercise (p.193)*
note: First the before picture is posted followed by the cropped version
I really enjoyed this activity because it allowed me to experiment and utilize all the tools that the still media tool (PixLr) in which I critiqued for my Mixed Media Digital Critique has to offer. The biggest conflict I had about this activity was selecting the pictures to perform the cropping exercise on. I felt like this was a big aspect of this part of the project because there had to be specific elements that allowed this picture to really pop and being meaningful to the viewer when it was cropped. Overall, I am happy with all the results and I actually am finding that this may be a great aspect to incorporate in the future to help highlight key aspects of a picture that may be forgotten otherwise.

  • Any Two Activities
Design Basic Index: Color Echo Exercise (p.219)
For this activity I needed to take an image and incorporate 3 colors pulled from the image itself into the background, text, etc. I found that utilizing the eyedropper tool for this exercise came in handy because I was able to select the exact colors from the photo in order to have the colors of the image echo throughout the final product. I enjoyed this activity because it allowed me to experiment with the gradient tool and see what does and doesn't work when echoing the colors of an image. Throughout this project I noticed that some colors I was more inclined to utilize more so than others. I am not sure if this might have been from the coordination of colors or because I was targeting a St. Patrick's Day theme. I also tried different fonts and the positioning of the font to see if this had any effect on how the overall image looked and whether or not the background took away from the viewers perceptions of the font. Please let me know what you think.

Design Basic Index: Logo Variations Exercise (p.221)

For this activity I was to select a design/form that I created in my Mini Art School #3 and add typography to the logo to create a logo design. I was to imagine that this logo has been accepted by a client, and that they are asking for four different designs of the logo in order to cover all of their media needs. On the right hand side are my four different designs. I was to incorporate color into 3 designs and leave one design simple with black and white. When deciding on the color scheme I decided on these colors because they were very neutral and with a brewery it can be referring to either a coffee brewery (fall/winter) or a beer brewery (spring/summer) so I felt like these colors covered both aspects depending on what the company is serving that time of the year. I found that the hardest part of this part of the project was since on my mini art school #3 this design/form was welded together I had to find a way to un-weld it which had an effect on the shape when I filled the shape with a new color other than black. It was challenging to incorporate a lot of pictures but I think the coordination of the colors and the design really accent each other.

Design Basic Index: Loosened Alignment Exercise-

Blog #3 Activity

Loosely assembled layout:

Highly structured layout:

Something I previously designed...revamped with new design knowledge

For the addition to Blog #3 I decided to take the website that I created in the course Intro to Digital Tools and make revisions to it based on the information I read about in this module. Although I am not completely done with it, because I am sure I can gain some insight and feedback to make even better changes to it, I am satisfied with my revisions I made after having read about the principles and rules of design. Below I listed the different aspects of my previous website that I decided to change and why I thought I would make this change.

Background color- I decided to change the color of my website because before with the planks of wood I felt like it was taking away from the website

Text color- I decided to change the color of my text to be a dark blue or black because I found that on my previous website I had various colors and I think it became to much.

Text format/size- I decided to change the heading fonts to Chester Market and all copy text to be written in Arial. I think this provided my website with a more simplified and basic approach.

The widgets- I changed the color and fonts of my calendar, forum, and other widgets so that it would be uniform and go with my whole website design.

Button Alignment- I thought I would change the alignment of the text on the buttons for the science and math pages and have it aligned to the right hand side since this would gravitate towards where the information was located. When editing this I liked the way it looked and thought it was a good fit.

Overall, I am really happy with how my revised website came out and cannot wait to be able to eventually edit it for my own classroom! I hope you enjoy viewing my website!

Blog #3

*******Click the link above*******
For this blog assignment I started to think about the different websites I have used throughout my time in education. A couple websites that stuck out to me were, i-Ready, PBSkids, edconnect, scholastic, and Insectropolis, just to name a few. However, when thinking about the purpose of this assignment I decided to revisit these websites after I completed the readings for this week, to determine what websites were good and/or bad examples of designs. One website that struck me as visually unappealing and overwhelming after revisiting it and having an understanding of website design was Insectropolis. This website was created to publicize the different aspects that the bugseum of New Jersey has to offer in hopes that it would inspire viewers of the website to stop by for a visit. In the following paragraphs I will discuss the different features of the website and how they follow or do not follow the different principles of design that we learned about in this week’s readings.

When talking about the design of this website I want to start out with mentioning the various design principles that I thought fit well with the design of this website and helped it have some visual fulfillment,
  • Trapped Negative Space: When navigating throughout this website the designers did a good
job of properly trapping the negative space toward the outside edges of the layout. When I first went onto the website I thought that maybe the outside edges of the layout were specifically for the homepage. However, when navigating to the various different pages throughout the website the outside edges all remained the same size. I think this provides the website with enough outer space that the viewer doesn’t seem overwhelmed when navigating throughout the website and having an array of information stretch across the screen. The outside edge creates the perfect width of the page that enables the designer to effectively place the information on the page without overwhelming the viewer.
  • Centering Everything: Another design rule that I thought the designers of this website implemented well was that the text that was written on the website was aligned to the left which helped to give it a nice straight line and allow the eye to have an understanding of where the next eye entry point was expected to go. Although I think there are features of the text alignment that could have been implemented better in the design (discussed later in alignment) the idea that the text wasn’t centered on this website really helped to have the website visually appealing for the viewers. Additionally, there was uniform alignment of the text throughout the site. When navigating throughout the website the text remained to be aligned to the left within copy, leads, headlines, and even captions/cutline.
  • Asymmetrical Balance: Although sometimes I would imagine asymmetrical designs to be chaotic and unorganized I think for this website it works particularly well. The placement of the different navigational tools, images, text and tags help to make this website flow nicely. That being said, it brings me to my last design element that I believe went well with this website design.
  • Proximity: I enjoyed that with this website all the navigational tools were bunched together, different events were advertised in the lower left hand side and a slideshow was presented at the top of the page followed with information that highlighted why people should visit the bugseum. The proximity continues throughout the entirety of the website and I found that I never was confused on where to look for a particular topic. The tabs of: About the Bugseum, Our Exhibits, Plan Your Trip, Education, Event Calendar, and Photo Gallery all help and greatly organize the different areas of the website that might be of interest to the various visitors on the website.
  • Bulky Borders and Boxes: The first design feature that I found to take away from the aesthetic value of the website was the variation of borders and boxes that were used throughout the website. It seemed like when revisiting the site after having read about different design features I started to really hone in on what made me feel a little overwhelmed when navigating throughout the website initially. I found that not only were the borders varied across the site but in addition there were moving features and bugs that helped to distract the user. I found that the bugs might have been placed strictly to have the viewer understand by first glance what this website was about. However, I found that the bugs might have been too much on the website with everything clustered initially and since the bugs were animated it helped to really be distracting for me and I imagine other viewers as well.
  • Backgrounds: The idea of bulky borders and boxes helps to bring me into my next rule of design that did not fit nicely into the design of this website. Although this feature was not terrible I think there could have been changes made that would have made it even better. Initially when visiting this website, I was not a fan of the brown background, to me this takes away from a lot of what the website has to offer. I think that because of this it is conveyed that the website is really busy and I feel as if there were to have been a lighter brown shade it would have fit better with the flow and visual appeal of the website.
  • Too Many Fonts: Another design feature that I did not like was not only the various text types that were used but also the different text colors as well. I think overall, this took away from what the text was trying to say. In the internet browser that I used to view the website, Mozilla Firefox, there was a feature at the top of the webpage that allowed me to view the website in reader view. This feature allowed me to simply read the text that was on the webpage in the simplistic black and white formatting. This put the text into a standard and classic size font but also made the text just black which helped me in reading what it was that the website had typed up. Although designers sometimes find a need in making their websites visually appealing if it is not carefully thought out, it can take away from the overall message that is being conveyed.
  •  Alignment: The next design feature that I thought was negatively portrayed in this website design was the alignment. Like I mentioned earlier I did enjoy that the designers did not center the text and rather aligned it to the left-hand side. However, the reason I think the alignment was bad was when reading the principles of design article it was stated to “always find something else on the page to align with, even if the two objects are physically far away from each other” (northernhighlands.com). Therefore when simply looking at the homepage the navigational links that are used to navigate throughout the site (About the Bugseum, Our Exhibits, Plan Your Trip, Education, Event Calendar, and Photo Gallery) are aligned to the left hand side of the page. However, when referring back to what was mentioned in the Principles of Design article it would have created a strong visual alignment & unity if the text for the navigational links would have been aligned to the right instead.
  • Contrast: I find that the contrast for this website is negatively portrayed because for the most part a lot of the information on the website looks visually similar. The text size is all relatively the same and is all represented in the same text color (blue, green, brown). The Principle of Contrast states, “If two items are not exactly the same, then make them different. Really different” (northernhighlands.com). Which was not emphasized throughout this website. Additionally, because there were so many different text types and sizes used throughout the website I found it very hard to identify what it was that was important information and what the designer really wanted me to focus in on as the viewer.
  • White Space: Last but not least, I found the lack of white space in the design of this website really took away from what the website’s viewers perceived when exploring this page. An important statement from a reading this week was, “white space is not your enemy” (Hagen & Golombisky, 2017). I think as designers we need to take an initiative for implementing the white space into our designs rather than working to get rid of it. Although the outside edges of the layout were negative space, that was primarily the only area where white space was utilized. In order to develop a more visually appealing website for viewers, it is imperative that designers implement white space much more frequently and include animation, images, text more infrequently in order to create an effective website overall.

Throughout this week’s reading it really helped me to see why it is important to become familiar and knowledgeable about the different principles and rules of design in order to create a web-design worth looking at. Overall, I really enjoyed this week’s readings and being able to understand what it is that makes a viewer particularly interested in a design.
