Blog Entry #6

For Task #1 this week I drafted a storyboard for my multimedia project having to do with Google Products for Education which is what my MMP project is focused on. I posted the images below of the storyboards I created. I started out with the homepage and then it gives an inner glimpse to each page that is within my website that teachers will be able to navigate to for each individual google education product. Although these are storyboard drafts I have intentions on sticking to these ideas as closely as possible. I would really enjoy insight from others as to what you think the best idea would be for this type of website design. My storyboard and website design will change depending upon the website design program that I decide to use. Wix is a website design that has a website with plenty of navigational buttons and looks similar to most websites. I used this website design platform in the past which inspires me to learn about other programs such as the following alternative website design program, Adobe Spark. This website design program is more sleek and simplified than Wix because it has a continuous scrolling page of features and pages for the entirety of the website. When creating my storyboards I focused on different rules of design that we have learned thus far in this class such as; upper left hand side logo home page button, the positioning of buttons, adding different modalities to the website for functionality. By adding these different web design features it makes the website more appealing to the audience and especially since my targeted viewers are understood to not be well advanced in technology a simplistic and easy navigational website would be beneficial. Overall, I hope you enjoy looking at my storyboards and I hope to gain some insight from you about what I should consider about my website designs going forward.

For Task #2 this week I decided I would create a short video to reflect on my running career. It was amazing when I started to create the video how hard it was to contain it to only :60 seconds. When reading through the tasks for this week I thought this task was going to give me the most trouble but I think overall, it was the easiest task and also the one I enjoyed the most. I think by creating this video and giving it a sense of modality by utilizing the ken burns tool to animate my still pictures real aided to my video slideshow. It is amazing how simply adding a feature or effect to a still picture can make such a major difference to what the viewer perceives. From my MDMC I clarified that I did not want to use Animoto since I did not want the watermark to take over my pictures and take away from the idea I was going with. Therefore, I decided to utilize a different program that I used in the past, iMovie. Overall, I found this program fairly easy to learn, the hardest aspect was learning where the different tools were located and how to navigate the program. However, after understanding the navigational concept it was smooth sailing. I hope you enjoy watching my video and can gain an insight as to why running is such a huge factor in my life and in my overall happiness, enjoy!

  1. Paige,
Thanks for sharing your storyboard! I am using Wix for my website as well. It's such a great site for beginners and even those who want to expand on their creativity! Your drawings are far better than what I made! I can see the general idea of what you intend on creating so I think you got this activity down. Would the first picture be what you expect the home page to look like? There are so many options available through Wix. Would you be using one of their blank templates or their predesigned ones? I would say for your designs, the blank template might be best considering the amount of components you have. Also, great job on your 60 sec video! I really like the picture of you running and how it zooms out to show the crowd cheering you on. By zooming out, it changed the tone of the picture from you running on your own, to you running in a competitive race.

  2. Hi Paige!! I really enjoyed viewing your running video and think you did an amazing job incorporating different forms of media and using the text to communicate! I am having the most trouble working on this 60 second video making sure that I include all the aspects in the assignment. I think you did an awesome job making this video run smoothly and not seem forced or out of place!
Your story board for the first part of this blog seems very well though out and designed! I can tell from your sketches that you are really thinking about the design elements we have discussed in class and through our readings!

  3. Hi Paige,
I watched your video as soon as you posted, but am coming back to comment! As I have been watching different videos people have posted, I am struck by the ways in which everyone has captured their experiences and passions so beautifully in 60 seconds.

I love how you highlighted the lessons you have learned throughout your video. I hope that you plan to use this video with your students! It really works on so many levels.

First, when teachers share personal experiences, it creates a kind of mutual respect in the classroom. I think of Maslow's Hierarchy of needs and how in order to learn students must feel a sense of safety, love, and belonging. This 60 second video could go a long way in establishing the connection between you and your students, which will allow them to take risks and trust you for support. I know with my own children, the stories at the dinner table often focus on the things they have learned about their teachers through the sharing of personal stories and connections. People need connection, and I think your video is a great window to open your world to theirs. (I also think you could totally use it at Back to School Night to share with parents!)

Second, I love the way in which all of your lessons can directly apply to learning in the classroom. Perseverance, drive, risk taking, supporting each other - these are all necessary for successful learning in any environment. It would actually be really cool to show this video at the beginning of the year and then do a student inventory having them choose one or more of the lessons you shared and apply it to their own experiences. You could learn so much about your students this way!

Thank you for always sharing your thoughtful, high level work, Paige. I always look forward to your posts and can't wait to see how your multimedia project unfolds!

  4. Hi Paige,
Our storyboards for our MMP are very similar. I am creating a website devoted to G-Suite (formerly GAFE) to assist my staff to provide them with training they never received when we made the transition into the Google environment. I am very interested in seeing how your project turns out. I have decided that I am going to use Google Sites to create my webpage and hope it wasn't the wrong choice, lol. Wix has great things to offer so I'm sure your will be great.
Your 60 second video was great and really expressed what running means to you and your love for it. I am not a runner but my brother is a serial marathoner and I see the same passion in him as I got from you video.

  5. Paige--Your layout ideas are great. I never heard of the website program you are planning on using. Do you know if they interface well with Google apps? I'm not that far into my own project and it sounds like the program you are using is more versatile than Goggle sites.

Your 60 second video was awesome. I'm a fairy new runner. I started back in July because of my boyfriend. He did 16 half marathons in 2016. I found it was a great way for us to connect, however, I never ran any major distance before. I started out slow and completed my first half marathon in mid-September. I could relate to a lot of phrases in your video. You message and the pictures you chose were strong and conveyed that message of perseverance. It's not an easy sport at all. The pain I was in after that first half was great but the pride was greater.

It kind of is like the mental perseverance one needs completing a graduate degree while working full time. It is a marathon but if you work hard and keep going you will be successful.

  6. Hi Paige - I really like the layout of the website you are designing. I think it's clear and well planned. I also really liked your 60-second video. My younger brother is an ultra marathoner, and my mom's a triathlete, so I loved what you had to say about the sport!
