Discussion Post #2

This week’s readings really helped put into perspective for me the importance that graphic design has on its viewers and how the visual appeal can have a great impact on how the viewers react to it and the time that is spent on the webpage and/or document. Being able to learn about the different principles of design will greatly affect my preparation for my Multimedia Montage Project by allowing me to apply these different principles in hopes of creating a visually appealing project that will interest my audience and enable them to remain connected and engaged within my design to ultimately enhance the communication, understanding and/or learning that Google products has to offer to the classroom environment. Being that my audience is targeted towards teachers it is important that the workshop that I develop will be pleasing to the eye, engaging for the viewers, and easily accessible for them to navigate and locate the important information that they will need in order to use and implement the Google products effectively throughout their own teaching practices.
By viewing Margaret’s interview, I was able to learn the basic aspects that I would need to take into consideration when designing my Multimedia Montage Project. It’s important for me to take into consideration what the purpose of my project is, and who the audience is that I am creating my project for. This will help me in focusing the different principles of design towards the viewers, making it clear for them what is important to understand, and ultimately take away from my professional development workshop. When educating teachers about the different functions of Google products, it is important for me to realize how overwhelming this tool can be for teachers to use. Therefore, by making my graphic design as less overwhelming as possible it will help teachers get the most from my workshop and prevent them from being overwhelmed by an overload of information.
As I was going through the readings I was amazed when learning about the different design sins and why it is important to stray away from committing them. Over the summer I was enrolled in the Intro to Digital Tools course where I was responsible for creating an educational website. Now reading about these sins for multimedia design I wish I would have known about these sins before creating the website. As I was reading through this weeks reading I am pretty sure I have committed almost every single sin throughout the creation of my website. I primarily was more focused on how it looked then the information that was presented or how accessible it was to the users of the website. Now understanding what the principles of design have to do with the viewer’s interpretation of a graphic design and where I went wrong on my previous design projects it will greatly help me in the creation of my Multimedia Montage Project.

  1. Hi Paige! I'm looking forward to seeing your project. I'm also so excited about the list of "sins" and the checklist of basics that were provided. I love checklists and these are going to be so helpful as we go forward with this course! I really want to keep in mind the "readability" of my project and make it a user-friendly experience.

  2. Hi Paige,

I enjoyed reading your post, especially with the addition of the memes! I also thought it was interesting to read about how many different "sins" there were when it comes to graphic designs. Who knew there were so many guidelines that could determine what was aesthetically pleasing to the eye as well as effective? After viewing the interview and the readings, I also had similar thoughts as you in that simplicity may be key to effectively communicating a message. I think it will be one of the many things to keep mind when creating our MMPs in the future.

  3. I actually attended a teacher's workshop involving google docs just today. Every table had their own computer and we added things indiscriminately as the group leader went down the document and slowly we agreed as a whole what to keep, what to edit, and what to just cut out. We had a downright Anonymous Menagerie and it was a pretty great experience. I agree that the many, many features offered by google are completely overwhelming and I tend to just ignore most of them. Good luck with your project to pare down all that into something more manageable.
